European alternatives to Microsoft 365: the 2026 landscape
There are more European alternatives to Microsoft 365 today than at any other moment in the past decade. The question is no longer "does anything exist?" but "which one fits my case?".
What exists now
Office.eu launched in March from The Hague. Full stack (email, document editing, storage, collaboration), data exclusively in European data centres, in a phased rollout by invitation.
Euro-Office is the consortium of IONOS, OpenProject, XWiki, Abilian, Btactic, Soverin, Proton and Nextcloud. Tech preview available; stable launch expected this summer.
Nextcloud Workspace (IONOS + Nextcloud) - a modular M365 alternative with Talk, Calendar, Office, files and AI. Enterprise edition available.
Proton - email, calendar, drive, password manager. Headquartered in Switzerland, heavily privacy-focused.
ONLYOFFICE - office suite (documents, spreadsheets, presentations) with native Microsoft-format compatibility. Latvia.
OpenDesk - the German bundle chosen by the German federal government as the basis of its own OpenDesk: Nextcloud, Collabora, Univention, OpenProject, Element Matrix, Jitsi.
What's missing
The piece that doesn't yet exist at the same level is unified identity and governance. Microsoft has Entra ID, Conditional Access, Intune and Defender in one console. In European alternatives, this is assembled piece by piece, typically with Keycloak or Authentik at the centre. It works, but it takes more operational effort.
The second piece is enterprise SSO maturity with third-party apps. M365 is everywhere; Office.eu and Nextcloud still require federation work case by case.
When migration makes sense now
For Portuguese SMBs with 30 to 200 users, no critical dependency on Power Platform or Dynamics, and sensitivity to sovereignty (healthcare, legal, public sector), migration to Office.eu or Nextcloud Workspace is viable today. We phase the transition keeping the M365 tenant in coexistence for six to twelve months.
For companies heavily dependent on Power BI, Dataverse, Power Apps or deep Dynamics integrations, it's not yet the moment. Migration exists, but effort exceeds benefit.
Our general recommendation: do the sovereignty audit today. Map your exposure. And design the path -even if you decide not to take it in the next twelve months.
